i subscribe to a daily comic called Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis and have most of the annuals (excepting the latest one if anyone from overseasland wants to be nice… mmm…) and this cartoon really catches the heart of the cynicism of rat and the innocence of pig, his two main characters…

I use this expression all the time.
Keeping it in 3rd person is also useful when you don’t really want to apologize, as you’re not apologising for your action directly, just a saying that you’re sorry they feel offended. It’s such a politically correct way of side-stepping the issue. It’s essentially a version of “I’m sorry you feel that way”, which isn’t an apology at all. Politicians love it.
