is both a comic i really dig (by stephan pastis – have all the annuals except the latest which i haven’t organised from overseasville yet) and a statement i wish to make as a regular blogger…
Brett Fish is a lover of God and people, and owns the world's most famous stuffed dolphin, No_bob (who doesn't bob). He believes that we are all responsible for making the world a significantly better place for everyone.
I take offence to people making fun of those with lower IQ’s. You call yourself a Christian but you make fun of people with mental disability. That is not cool.
dude, seriously? firstly, it’s a cartoon… secondly, it’s aimed at stoopid people, not people with mental disability (big difference), thirdly, a big IQ does not make you smart (and vice versa) – it just means you’re good (or bad) at the specific thing the IQ test is focusing on, fourthly, seriously? you are not cool, have a pillow.
Sorry but I can detect sarcasm even with a lower IQ. Not cool bud. You are very clever I have no doubts but please be more understanding of those who are not as smart.
Clinton, read my comments, then go back and look at the cartoon, then read your comments – they do not match up – i am a huge fan of people who challenge wrong in society and the church etc etc but to take offence at me and use the “you call yourself a Christian…” line when i was neither making fun of people with lower IQ’s nor ripping people with mental disability is beyond ridiculous – and if you are prepared to publically rant, then you need to be responsible enough to receive critique on your ranting and realise that maybe you got it wrong this time.
Just maybe growing up I have received lots of teasing for not being so clever at school and failing two grades as well. I could not cope and had to leave school at the end of grade 9. So whenever I hear about others calling others stupid or retarded i get a bit upset. It is not good to joke about problems people have. I do try to study and learn and can now pass as normal but I do have a disability and get a bit sensitive if people rip off people who are not as bright. Even using S word makes take me back to all the teasing. So maybe you did not think but in future try to think of what it is like for those with these learning disability problems. But if you did not mean it then I probably jumped to a bad conclusion. But just be careful from now on with this type of comment.
cool bud i hear you and i am sorry for what you have gone through – maybe you were unfortunate in terms of being called whatever you were called for just not excelling at one particular thing (whether it is IQ testing or academic work at school) which is a sign of a sick society that rewards one thing but ridicules another (altho at the end of the day everyone is happy to have a working toilet that a plumber has somewhere had to get involved in) – if you understand pearls before swine it is largely satirical and so the dumb people it is referring to are more likely people who speak on cellphones in movies or politicians etc etc and not people with learning disabilities – i think technical schools (as one example) are great because for people who are not able to respond to academics in terms of learning subjects as well as other people it gives them a different area for exploring their talent – the problem comes in when we judge the one as better than the other which is ridiculous (maybe that’s where real stupid comes in) and so whether people are good with their hands or in learning subjects or debating doesn’t really matter – what does is what do you do with what you’ve got and despite your hard upbringing it sounds like you have reached a place of functioning well in society
only thing i would disagree with in your statement is when you talk about being happy to pass as normal – dude, you have skills and talents in some field – never aim at normal – you were created for so much more, whether it is recognised by those around you or not – so go for it!
Thanks for your advice. I should try for more but am happy as normal. I will keep trying and must try maybe many times harder to learn something. Some times I have trouble catching a joke and then try to laugh to cover up and be polite and try to work it out later. I suppose we can call insesitive similar in a way to stupid or it should rather be replaced and stupid should be for insensivie people and not for low intelligence. My IQ was about 80 at its highest and I tried a few tests. Most people are more intelligent than myself. But you learn to cover up by not mixing with leaned people too much as they sometimes look down on me. I am a bit dyslexic, but its mainly low iq. I work with my hands and live a simple life. I try to read many books to help with my education and it helps a lot. I avoid people face to face and and surf the net or talk to people on the net as it give me time to think of a response. In a normal conversation I have trouble being fast enough and people look at me and think badly of my intelligence or think i am slow minded which i am, so I avoid that situation. But thanks for your encouragement and for keeping up with this column. I will put it as a favourite and read it again.
cool buddy, all the best – hopefully you will meet some people who will accept you as you are face to face because if they don’t then they are probably not the kind of people worth knowing – you don’t seem stupid to me at all and you should never have to cover up who you really are to be able to fit in with the crowd – there are people in the world who will dig you for who you are so keep looking – the internet is great but it’s no substitute for real life – and you can know above all of this that God definitely accepts you as you are and wants you to know how much He loves you – hopefully there is a church congregation somewhere out there who will accept you and welcome you in and have some people who can befriend you – the church does get it wrong a lot sometimes but when it does get it right – and really right in the loving people kind of way – then it is an amazing thing to be part of – whereabouts are you?

I dont know if you edited it but the earlier post said “STOOPID”. Now it is removed – so thanks for removing it.
