we currently share an office with another non-profit in Oakland, California and have been there a few weeks but it was only this week that i took notice of this do’s and dont’s sign on the wall…
i think it speaks largely for itself. do not poop on the floor, use a toilet [my question is WHO USED TO USE THIS OFFICE BEFORE US that they had to have that kind of sign put up?]
and then the third one is that guns are not allowed but in their place, black and white people shaking hands are definitely an encouraged thing.
must remember not. to. poop. on. floor…
Hahaha! What a crazy sign! At first I thought you were in a third-world country but then I read your post again. Oakland, CA? Wow, really?
it is a youth centre i guess, but wow!
Isolated, this poster is hilarious because in a restroom, the message seems SO obvious to most of us. And, guns in a bathroom had never crossed my mind before today. It made me curious. I briefly asked your “Uncle Google” about Barrio Libre and discovered that it was or is part of a greater campaign http://barriolibre.blogspot.ca/ What initially seemed funny in an isolated case, seems pretty sad about the state of society (or a pocket of society) that has to be reminded, don’t crap on the floor, let’s not trash the place, and how about we live in harmony instead of taking each other down with firearms. I didn’t see it at the beginning because i read the sign left to right, then next row (left to right again). I missed that the sign is actually 3 vertical contrasting pictures.
I once took great exception in a personnel development seminar where the speaker said there was no such thing as “common sense.” I was like, “What the h*ll? There sure is… what’s the matter with you?!” I figured that it was the adults’ responsibility to teach children the common things like… if you touch the hot stove, you’ll get burned OR if you sh*t on the floor, it shows your lack of respect for yourself, your neighborhood, and for the people you live amidst. Clearly, that speaker was partially right, at least for growing pockets of our society. It’s sad that people would have to coach each other through posters to essential rediscover civic pride and simple respect for self and one another.
I like your post and I enjoy reading your blog. Thanks for letting me ramble some thoughts too.
Wo! You just took something hilarious and made it deep. But i like it. Thank you so much for your thoughts. How can something be completely funny and yet deeply tragic at the same time? Well i think you’ve explained it well. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. Great insightful stuff.
Hahaha… Kollaam… It is hilarious… Have you ever asked any people there why it is like so?
Well… I like your blog and have followed it…
