It’s time for the Valerie Kondo Experince…

i don’t really know who Marie Kondo is.

i haven’t watched her show. Something to do with decluttering your life and home and work space i believe.

But this week, when tbV [aka the beautiful Val] shared her latest idea with me, she was the first person to came to mind.

Val has decided on an eight week project of clearing out the things, which i wanted to share with you because i’m sure there are a lot of people out there who just need to hear the idea to go: Yup, that’s me!

It’s very simple – the idea is to do one room or theme per week and the plan she has come up with looks like this:

The Valerie Kondo Experience

Week 1: Clothes

Week 2: Kitchen [including recipe books]

Week 3: Games and Vinyl

Week 4: Personal drawers

Week 5: Books

Week 6: Linen

Week 7: Study Cupboards

Week 8: Garage

Clothes is great and something probably most of us need to do quite regularly. My feeling is that if you have not worn something for a year it is probably good to go. But maybe make a faster harder rule of two years. But seriously, there are things we never touch that other people could be wearing – and in my case a bunch of shirts with holes under the armpits that need to get thrown out already…

The Kitchen week is also great cos not sure if you are like us but we have an impressive supply of Pick n Pay Smart Shopper Free magazines and we are going to take all the recipes we want out of them and make a folder [that we might actually use] rather than having the overwhelming display of so many magazines we are too scared to touch.

Vinyl, games and books also gives us a great opportunity to have the things in the hands of the people that want them.

And so on. Your weeks may look different to ours, but why not join us in this endeavour and then if it is good quality stuff you are getting rid of, do what you can to get it in the hands of the people who need it most. We have to move away from giving our worst stuff to people in need. But this might be an opportunity for some of our quality things – we just don’t make good use of – to be passed on to people who might appreciate them a lot more.
