Continuing the ‘Race with Me’ video series i take a look at one thing that has been super helpful for me in terms of learning and growing and becoming better prepared for conversations about race and knowing that changes i need to make in my own life.
If you have asked the question, “What can I do?’ in terms of race vibes, this is a very good place to start.
[…] Race with me: The voices in my head […]
Interesting your posts, but what is it that you want to change? Instead of sitting around making videos all day, here is an idea. Why not go to Masi in Noordhoek and help to clean the canals? I mean you have a lot of free time on your hands, so why not go and practice what you preach? Or do you just want to tell someone else they must go do it? It all comes down to that at the end of the day, someone must do it. The people living there dont want to clean the canals. Why don’t you go help them?
Thanks for the comment, Jean, which has nothing to do with this particular video so i assume you didn’t watch it? i do some stuff and it’s definitely a combination of trying to motivate as many people as possible to be changing mindsets and actions and getting out there and living better. It starts with me for me but it must start with you for you so what are you doing? Surely you’re not calling for me to clean those canals without being there yourself first right?
Actually I have many times. So your point is mute.
You seem like a “motivator”, but not a doer. Maybe go to Masi and clean some canals? Or is it below you?
That is absolutely not below me. i have done stuff like that before. And would gladly do it again. But i would do something like that through relationship as it feels a lot more effective than just going somewhere and doing something. So at the moment one of the things i do is help out with an after school program at my church. Building relationships with children who don’t look like me at all and helping them with their homework and hanging out with them and getting to know them better. What is one thing you are doing at the moment to build into other people?
I think its easy to play build relationship and all this, schoolkids and all. After church sitting around talking to kids seems noble, and fun, but its like being a pre-school teacher or a teacher? Maybe if that is your calling its cool.
But it would send a hectic message if you actually went to Masi and put on some gumboots and protective clothing, took a spade and started doing some canal digging. I wouldn’t do it as I don’t want to catch germs.
Jean, why don’t they in Masi dig canals? I mean when I drive past, they are sitting around. Please explain.
