plans for new years? how about arisefesting with us…

i have had mixed experiences with new years eves and days - more often they have involved me running around trying to organise events and keep everyone else organised or entertained or worshipping or something like that and generally the ones where i have managed to avoid planning/organising/running anything have been the good ones [altho i do have great memories of some of the others don't get me wrong] and last year's hike to cape [...]

it is unacceptible to use the term 'raped' to describe a game, exam…

in the last decade, in south africa anyways, but i assume further afield as well, there has been a tendency to slangify negative words and so words like 'sick' and 'wicked' which used to have negative connotations have now been made cool (is 'cool' still cool?) words for the in-crowd which is perhaps a desensitization of another kind to be looked at another time... but recently, on two separate occasions, i heard the latest word [...]

is richard dawkins still evolving

i have managed to come into contact with a lot of atheists (and theists turned atheists, and on saturday a guy bouncing between the atheism and agnosticism and even someone who claimed to be an agnostic atheist) this past year and so i have been a slight little bit more interested in the arguments than i previously was (because of the people and not so much the arguments) but i found this article really interesting [...]

every time you shave a moustache dies

so someone sent me this band link with the line "hey dude, i didn't know you played bass" and if you watch the first ten seconds of the music video you might double take like every single person did in this house when "i" come round the corner - classic... but great title for a song anyways... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjPcW88sLCg

safe as butter

so recently i found this site with cartoons on it, some of which make me laugh a lot, some of which are smile out loud funny and some which are a little too edgy for my liking, so kinda have to sift through the okay and mediocre to get to the good, but this one today really made me smile... http://buttersafe.com/2010/10/14/wall-rus

why i hate cars

cars are stupid - i can prove it - they have been used to kill people - drunk drivers in cars have recklessly taken thousands of innocent lives in our country alone - old cars get rusty and dangerous because people often can't afford to give them proper maintainence and take them off the road when they should go - don't get me started on woman drivers - or men drivers - in fact we [...]

still (theatre)sporting after all of these years

so this last saturday TheatreSports turned 17 – that’s right, cape town’s longest running show and too-often best kept secret has been running for 17 years, and i have been around for ten of them... we celebrated with a halloween themed birthday show in the little theatre opposite the intimate theatre where we perform every monday night at 8.30 (you should come!) – it was a bumper show with no less than 12 of our [...]

Pearls Before Swine

is both a comic i really dig (by stephan pastis - have all the annuals except the latest which i haven't organised from overseasville yet) and a statement i wish to make as a regular blogger... ...pass me the cushion...

50 word story comp finalists…

my friend bruce collins recently held a 50 word short story competition which i entered and i have made it to the final five with some really stiff competition - here is the blog and head on over to http://baristabruce.wordpress.com/2010/11/01/five-50-word-finalists to vote for your favourite... 'Many years ago, there was a 50 word short story challenge somewhere on the interwebs. I fell in love with the concept of telling a story briefly and precisely. Hence, [...]
