for the determinedly board [game recommendation – Cities and Knights]

so you've played Settlers of Catan now and you're looking for something more challenging, even more invigorating... is it even possible? why yes it is, settlers of catan: cities and knights - takes all the brilliance, variety, strategy and intrigue of Settlers and then sends it up a notch (or a couple of notches) there are a bunch of expansion packs for settlers of catan and i haven't tried them all (heard too many disparaging [...]

for the determinedly board [game recommendation – Settlers of Catan]

who remembers - with great reminiscory reverberations - sitting up all nite as a lightie playing monopoly til all hours of the morning? [pretty much the only way to finish a decent game] or waging full on risk warfare with your little yellow three edge single men wedges and your bigger yellow five edge ten-men wedges until you had cornered the last remaining opponent in australia and piled the biggest force known to world domination [...]

new year's reVolutions part 5: strawberries!

so this morning the beautiful val and myself and a whole assortment of other people went off to polkadraai strawberry to do some strawberry picking which is the first time i have ever done that... it was immensely hot, but a lot of fun and the reVolutionary part of it being that it was a new experience and that one of the changes i want to make this year to my life (especially as half [...]

new year's reVolutions…

i have never been a big fan of the whole 'new year's resolution' vibe mostly from the point of having been indoctrinated into that way of thinking from an early time in life - "arr, it's rubbish, you make promises that you break within a week, arr" [it seems like a pirate may have been doing that particular indoctrination but i think it was quite possibly more my parentals] but the last few days of [...]

what would Jesus play? [and other reflections on Arisefest 2010]

sometimes i like to picture Jesus in a modern day setting and wonder how His life and ministry would have looked if it was 2011 when God decided to come to earth in human form to settle the original score instead of 2000ish years ago would He have watched movies or played computer games? Would He have had His own Facebook page or blog? Would Jesus own a cellphone (my thorts are He probably wouldn’t [...]

two roads scrabbled in the woods, and i scored 167…

just got the word 'diverges' over two triple words (e on a double letter, s was a blank) and scored 167 in online scrabble which is some 40 plus points more than my biggest word before... was a game my beautiful wife started with a 7 letter word so a nice comeback and i finished with 500 plus for i think the second time ever. in other news just made some savoury muffins with which [...]

botswanan reflections: next year

so botswana was hot. very hot. hotter than the camembert cheese (or lack thereof) in the monty python 'the cheese shop' skit was runny. and so a lot of the time it was a case of existing and surviving and seeking shade. but there was some contemplation that took place, in between the gaps (surely you mean 'in the gaps?' - yes, quite, i clearly panic'd!) about life, the universe, and a whole bunch of [...]

botswanan reflection: the animals

so the beautiful val and i just got back from a rad and timely botswana trip with good friends dreadlock mike and nancy the twin and also some friends of theirs (brent, zeldy, norm and kate) and have some incredible memories of a stunning, stunning place we were really spoilt with the animal sightings - elephant (including the smallest baby elephants i have ever seen), giraffe, wildebeest (including the lesser known pussybeest and the lonely [...]
