Improv Vibes in Cape Town: What’s up? Doc!

Last night i had to tell one of my Improv team mates [who had been out of the room] that they were the Minister of Finance at a Rodeo and that the murder weapon was a piece of Bread at which point they had to 'kill' me with the bread. Only problem is, i had to do the entire thing in a made up language called Gibberish. No English could be spoken at all. I [...]

Just showing up: a vigil for Sinoxolo

This has been a tough two weeks with a focus on the deaths of Sinoxolo and Franziska in Cape Town. Two tragic deaths. One not more important than the other. One not more meaningful than the other. Two lives lost. Countless families, friends, communities affected. Much pain. These were two very bad things. As people tend to do on social media, the moment you start speaking about the one, you are challenged about the other [...]

An inconvenient preach

6 With what shall I come before the Lord     and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,     with calves a year old? 7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,     with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,     the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.     And what does [...]

All deaths matter: In memory of Sinoxolo and Franziska

Today a group of us head out to Khayelitsha to join in the vigil to remember the life of a young woman, Sinoxolo Mafevuka, who was found murdered there last week. The same week when another young woman, Franziska Blöchliger, was found murdered in the Tokai forest. Both murders are complete tragedies. The temptation is to add a 'but' or an 'and' and depending on what your context, background and connection is, try to make one seem [...]

Friends

An area i am well rich in is friends. That might seem trite or bumper stickery or Oprah-informed or something, but it's not. It is an absolute truth. If there is an area that i feel most privileged in in life it is in the area of Friendship. i struggle to get my head around it. i read a quote on the internet that said: Good friends talk about their sex lives. Best friends talk [...]

Some petrol for your thoughts

This is a follow up to the post i wrote a few days ago looking at petrol attendants in South Africa. Before i actually wrote the previous post [or while i was writing it, really] i stuck this survey question as a status on Facebook: Monday Survey: How much [if anything] do you tip your petrol attendant in South Africa when throwing in some petrol? Which i would highly recommend you to cut and paste on [...]

Let’s make some history.

Do you remember where you voted in 1994? Where you were when the twin towers fell on 9/11? How about when we won the 1995 World Cup of Rugby? More importantly, where did you stand in 2016? The year everything changed... We are in the middle of making History. It started picking up pace with Rhodes Must Fall which was followed by Fees Must Fall and either the Anti-Corruption marches or the Zuma Must Fall [...]

A Frikkin Hashtag: #BonoSearchUpdate

Has Bono still not found what he was looking for? With last week's #IWouldLikeToBeBetterAt greatness still ringing in our ears, we looked to the greatest rock band on earth [in my opinion, some of you clearly didn't think so, and let us know] for inspiration. Having played without a co-host i decided i needed to right that wrong and this week's host Danielle actually sent me a request asking if she could join me and as a first [...]

Step towards

You can do it! You can take one more step! i think i know to some extent how you are feeling. You're tired. You're frustrated. You've really been making an effort in terms of these race and privilege conversations and you just want to get through another day without having to feel bad about something else. You feel attacked when you've tried to give an opinion. You feel misunderstood when you have made every effort [...]

From R2 to R20

In South Africa we have people who pump our petrol for us. i generally try to tip the petrol attendant to thank them for doing a good job. But what is a good tip? Years ago it used to feel like a R2 coin or a R5 coin was good. Returning from Americaland 18 months ago and continuing to top R2 to R5 suddenly became something tbV and i started to question. As a consumer [...]
