botswanan reflection: the animals

so the beautiful val and i just got back from a rad and timely botswana trip with good friends dreadlock mike and nancy the twin and also some friends of theirs (brent, zeldy, norm and kate) and have some incredible memories of a stunning, stunning place we were really spoilt with the animal sightings - elephant (including the smallest baby elephants i have ever seen), giraffe, wildebeest (including the lesser known pussybeest and the lonely [...]

catflap man, catflap man… he does anything except…

so two nites ago we get a knock on our security complex apartment door at around 9.30pm and so being the nice friendly neighbourly guy i am i go and open it and it's not nice to call someone a weirdo on first impression so i feel unable to describe to you the person who was outside the door [strange, cos usually an unexpected knock that late at nite at our complex means they've pulled [...]

seriously dude, back slowly away from my hockey stick bag…

and by 'my' i mean nick black who lent me his hockey stick and bag after mine was savagely taken from somewhere probably (seems to be my trend) so anyways, the other day before a hockey match i was getting ready in the changerooms and by chance glanced down at my hockey stick bag and - kidding you notness taking place here by me of you - there is a little red circle near the [...]

bad business name #1

the other day i drove past a hairdressing place in claremont called Rapunzels hair studio and upon brief reflection i thort to myself, "that is a pretty awful name for a business - Rapunzel after all is the fairy-tale character who never cut her hair... ever... and you're gonna trust her to cut yours...?" so maybe you can pull in for a light colour tint or possibly even a dry perm (i don't even know [...]

plans for new years? how about arisefesting with us…

i have had mixed experiences with new years eves and days - more often they have involved me running around trying to organise events and keep everyone else organised or entertained or worshipping or something like that and generally the ones where i have managed to avoid planning/organising/running anything have been the good ones [altho i do have great memories of some of the others don't get me wrong] and last year's hike to cape [...]

it is unacceptible to use the term ‘raped’ to describe a game, exam…

in the last decade, in south africa anyways, but i assume further afield as well, there has been a tendency to slangify negative words and so words like 'sick' and 'wicked' which used to have negative connotations have now been made cool (is 'cool' still cool?) words for the in-crowd which is perhaps a desensitization of another kind to be looked at another time... but recently, on two separate occasions, i heard the latest word [...]

50 word story comp finalists…

my friend bruce collins recently held a 50 word short story competition which i entered and i have made it to the final five with some really stiff competition - here is the blog and head on over to http://baristabruce.wordpress.com/2010/11/01/five-50-word-finalists to vote for your favourite... 'Many years ago, there was a 50 word short story challenge somewhere on the interwebs. I fell in love with the concept of telling a story briefly and precisely. Hence, [...]

orange you glad i didn't say "river trip"

so tomorrow i join with andrew of vaughan once more (as i did two years ago) and a bunch of youngsters from Christchurch, Kenilworth, to head up to and then down the river of orange (yes, it's my new thing, deal with it!) and i am very much looking forward to it... originally we were hoping that the beautiful val would be able to be there but sadly thesising and her old housemate's wedding will [...]
