how lo(han) can you go?

i am sitting at the computer with three news articles in front of me: one is the exciting story of the Chilean miners who have been trapped underground since August 5 who are about to be rescued and are 'fighting' over who can go last so that their friends can get to freedom first - inspirational story of courage and survival and just so enthralling to see the whole world focused on the kind of [...]

i'm 'sorry' i offended you

i subscribe to a daily comic called Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis and have most of the annuals (excepting the latest one if anyone from overseasland wants to be nice... mmm...) and this cartoon really catches the heart of the cynicism of rat and the innocence of pig, his two main characters... [For a more completely pun infested Pearls before Swine strip and more of this brilliant wit, click here]

orange you glad i didn't say "river trip" again

so we made it home from the ambassador's youth orange trip yesterday... made it home? sounds like survival talk there? oh wait, it is... the trip for me included a near death experience - or one that felt like it anyway - for me and so i am really glad to be back, and with my the beautiful Val again... all in all it was an incredible trip - a lot of effort needed at [...]

orange you glad i didn't say "river trip"

so tomorrow i join with andrew of vaughan once more (as i did two years ago) and a bunch of youngsters from Christchurch, Kenilworth, to head up to and then down the river of orange (yes, it's my new thing, deal with it!) and i am very much looking forward to it... originally we were hoping that the beautiful val would be able to be there but sadly thesising and her old housemate's wedding will [...]

step away from the mud. holiday with me.

“We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." - C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

you made me so angry, oh wait no you didn't

i have a hypothesis which is like a zoologist student's big masters year essay on 4000-8000 lbs river-dwelling creatures that are responsible for more deaths per year than lions... but that's a different story... what i want to suggest to you today is that no-body in the world has the ability to make me angry "but brett, that just isn't true, i've watched you play hockey" "silence, in-fidelllll i kill you" thankx achmed, but i'll take [...]

i'd rather you were an atheist than a 'christian'

so, once we get past the mindless comments of people responding to the blog title and not actually reading it, what am i on about? if you haven't read my other blog about the christians choosing to become atheist (http://brettfish.wordpress.com/2010/09/13/a-theist-walks-into-an-atheist-bigbang-its-a-steel-atheist) i would suggest you begin there, cos this is a (s)equal of sorts... so in the context of finding out that one of my church peoples had turned atheist over the varsity holidays, i have [...]

a theist walks into an atheist… (big)bang – it's a steel atheist

'a theist believes in at least one god, but denies the existence of many gods' [the skeptic's dictionary] whereas an atheist denies the existence of god completely and 'at heist' is just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that's not important now... a theist and an atheist - so vastly different and yet the difference between them is nothing... or 'a space' to be more precise... [disclaimer: oh [...]
