#BlackMonday

Time to leave the old South African flag behind for good

What a week, South Africa. Of old flags and racist rants and countrywide demonstrations and polarised conversations and threats of rape and questions of intelligence and more. How do we move on from here? i wrote this post to try and invite people from both sides to consider the opinion of the other and step towards them, at least in understanding if not agreement. One aspect of last week that came up was conversations about [...]

After the #BlackMonday dust clears…

So #BlackMonday was a thing. And wasn't, depending on who you were. And was accidentally so for tbV and others who just happened to realise into the day that they had unintentionally worn black. For me it had to be a lot more intentionally as probably eighty percent of my shirts are black. So i wore my blue 'Peace to the world' shirt which felt somewhat appropriate. What i found interesting when looking on my [...]

Some more thoughts on #BlackMonday and #AllDeathsMatter

Yesterday i shared a whole bunch of thoughts - mine and others - about the concept of #BlackMonday and wearing black to honour the lives of farmers who have died. Two statuses i added later in the day, which many may not have seen, but which i think sum up some of my thoughts on the matter were this one: People who have been murdered on farms is heart-breaking and horrific and i imagine that [...]

Some thoughts about wearing black on Monday for the farmers

Today's Facebook status with regards to the #BlackMonday in response to farm murders has garnered a lot of attention. This is what i wrote: Anytime someone is murdered it is a tragedy. But, if you are concerned about the farm murders to the point of wanting to wear black for the victims, but have never considered wearing black for the black, coloured or indian victims of murder [which check your statistics, are all being killed [...]

South Africa – the week that followed: Where to from here?

South Africa, how are we doing? How is Justice being fought for this week? It's been a week since a bunch of you wore black in protest. It's been a couple of days since a bunch of you marched, a bunch of you didn't march, some of you held hands in a chain [or if reports are correct, went to go and hold hands in a chain and didn't hold hands in a chain, but [...]

Having received your marching hors d’oeuvre…

If this last week was the first time you ever did anything in terms of protest then THAT IS AMAZING. Well done. Good for you. That's really great. At the same time it is very possible that it also sucks that it took you so long. i fall into that category. For the last two and a half years i have been going on about this stuff in terms of writing and engaging with people [...]

#BlackMonday review: Wear black if you want, but also don’t.

So #BlackMonday was a thing. For anyone who missed it, i wrote a post during the day collating a lot of the stuff i shared and read which i titled: Bleak Monday: Studios were touched It was in some ways a frustrating day, but i also saw a lot of what felt like really helpful engagement which for the most part was positive and for that i am grateful. We don't have to all end [...]

Bleak Monday: Studios were touched

Some thoughts linked to #BlackMonday that took place in South Africa this past week... i imagine an up market coffee shop somewhere in the heart of Cape Town where black clothed wearing upper class people are sipping on their frozen no-whip skinny ironies... = = = i woke up this morning with no idea what i was going to wear - which is stupid, really, cos Monday is Batman t-shirt day [this is not a [...]
