Common Change

The Domino effect – this is how it begins…

One person gently pushes over one domino. Before you know it, all the dominoes are knocked over. The UK Zoom Last night i was part of a Zoom call with around twenty people, mostly from the UK. Alongside a new friend, Shabazz [filmmaker, rapper, goatee wearer extraordinaire] and hosted brilliantly by another new friend Andrew, the two of us answered questions around the topic 'Jesus, Race and Change' and engaged with each other and [...]

Ten Life Hackery things to make things work better.

A lot of great ideas in the world are simply never thought of, until they are. We are part of some groups and some practices which feel quite positive and so i thought it would be fun to share some of them in the hopes that you might discover a new thing or two and have your lives transformed as much as ours have been... feel free to let some of our ideas spark [...]

The power of a network to flip a country on its head

This past week has been tough. Sitting with a R40 000 bill over our heads [alongside the more manageable R12000 to fix our car] for driving into a BMW is not to be found on the list of 'Ten Ways to De-Stress your life'. But, we are surrounded by people who know and love us and there is no way conceivable to us that tbV [the beautiful Val] and i are going to find ourselves [...]

Breaking Bread [with Trevor]: On the White Saviour Complex

Trevor and i have not done a Tandem Blog post for a while and so we decided to jump right into this topic of The White Saviour Complex with the rules being five comments per person at around 100 words back and forth until we have a conversation to share. You can see this and more on Trevor's Swart Donkey blog over here (1/10) Trev: Brett, you and I both come from incredibly similar backgrounds. [...]

Give the change you want to see…

About a week ago i was hanging out with a group of friends discussing some quite incredible stories of generosity that we had all been involved in this past year. Each person in the group was connected to a person in the story of generosity although the majority of the group didn't know the people involved. The stories ranged from educational assistance to helping start up a township business to paying for a vehicle to [...]

i found Jesus [He was in Durban!]

Just to be clear, that's not Jesus in the picture, it's my friend Rudzani Thangoane. i met him in Durban too. Sho, it would take too many words to do our recent KZN trip any justice, but let me try a few. That was definitely the highlight two week period of 2017 for me so far, and so Cape Town you had better work your magic quickly cos i am feeling strongly pulled in that direction [...]

Money it forward in 2017

How do you spend your money? The forbidden, mysterious, never-asked question. i'm not quite sure why, but that's a subject for another post. In this one, all i want to do, is encourage you to be intentional with your money and to choose some good things and people to spend it on in 2017. Recently i wrote about five different areas we can look to be proactive in that will help us have a Super [...]

the man and the coins

A man was sitting opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his friends to him, the man said, "This poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their [...]

Some Pictures to help you Walk through #FeesMustFall

There have been a lot of words written this last week with regards to #FeesMustFall and it can be quite overwhelming to try and wade through them all. Sometimes pictures can speak louder than words, so here is a post with some of the better pictures i have found that help to put this past week and some of the related issues into some kind of perspective. Firstly the Ant vs Cricket scenario we witnessed [...]

The Power of Community

i LOVE that description of Generosity - being open-handed. We experienced that this week. tbV had a conversation with one of the car guards down the road from us and found out that he had a baby daughter and some issues with getting formula for her. She stuck up a question on Facebook for her paediatrician friends and had a whole host of answers and suggestions [and volunteers of assistance and even resource-gathering] within the hour. [...]
