Changing Cape Town one garden at a time: Meet Ujamaa

Let me introduce you to Ujamaa... Definition: The Swahili word ujamaa means 'extended family', 'brotherhood' or 'socialism'; as a political concept it asserts that a person becomes a person through the people or community. Yesterday i was given the privilege of hanging out with a small group of truly inspirational people doing small but country-transforming things. The Ujamaa Collective, as they are known, are in the middle of a seven-day walk, starting in Khayelitsha where [...]

A New Normal for 2018

i have an invitation for you... Much like i've started speaking about Christmas a little early so that we can be intentional about putting plans and traditions into effect before the fact, i want to take a look at this whole going into the New Year thing. i've never been a huge fan of the whole New Year's Resolutions' vibe, because my understanding of how they work is that you make a bunch of promises [...]

Join me and give up ____ in 2018

A long time ago - in this galaxy -  gave up Coke [the drink] and chocolate for a year. Before that i used to drink about 500ml Coke every 2 or 3 days, and me and chocolate! The Coke was quite easy and after that year i found that i had developed an anti-taste for Coke and even today rarely drink it, except perhaps after a sporting event or at a party if there is [...]

i found Jesus [He was in Durban!]

Just to be clear, that's not Jesus in the picture, it's my friend Rudzani Thangoane. i met him in Durban too. Sho, it would take too many words to do our recent KZN trip any justice, but let me try a few. That was definitely the highlight two week period of 2017 for me so far, and so Cape Town you had better work your magic quickly cos i am feeling strongly pulled in that direction [...]

Be intentional this Christmas

"Always give someone else the best slice." Wow, that doesn't sound like me. Except maybe sometimes when i'm with my wife. But also even sometimes not. And actually it's not me, it's my good friend Dalene Reyburn, who wrote this super helpful piece, 'How to feast and not get fat this festive season: 20 small ideas.' There is some really good stuff in there, like: If you can, determine to give away at least half [...]

Deep Dive Conversation at St Johns

Last night we hosted another Deep Dive Conversation Dinner, this time at someone else's house. This was a dinner that has been in the planning for months and one that i've been super excited and anticipationary about. Getting some leaders from St Johns Anglican church [where i currently hang out and am preaching on Sunday in the am actually if you want to come and hear!] to meet around food and conversations about race, with [...]

Pretty Frys for a white guy: Teriyaki Prawn Stir Fry

A little while ago i wrote about a breakfast meeting i had with Brett [great name] from Frys. He gave me a bunch of their products and i said i'd attempt to cook some up and blog about the experience and invited a bunch of people to join me. While i didn't quite get up to speed with inviting people cos life is so rush-rush busy, tbV and i decided last night to try out [...]

Pretty Fry’s for a white guy

i had breakfast with myself this morning. Well that's not entirely true, but the big bearded man who sat across me also goes by the name of Brett [Thompson] and he is a living legend. He also is a vegan, but wait, before you start throwing things, just hear me out for a little bit. i met Brett through my wild pink-haired You Tube legend of a friend Grant Hinds [go check out his stuff here, [...]

The Honey(melon)moon is over: Meat-free weak.

So let me begin by saying this, "I really LOVE meat!" For the last, wow, must be almost two years?, my wife tbV and i have been doing our best to do a week of normal eating [as in what we're used to, which is not a crazy amount of meat actually] followed by a meat-free week. But we were chatting last night and realised [or confessed] that we don't find it all that easy. [...]

I ate vegan and live to tell the tale.

A couple of weeks ago tbV and i were invited to a vegan function with Frys. It took place last night at the stunning ginger & lime kitchen and so at 6.30pm we nervously approached what, to be honest, we were not super excited about... the prospect of free food when it's vegan is like saying to me: Hey Brett, have a cookie - it has raiSINs in... We had also sampled the Fry's veg patties once before [...]
