Pearls before Skeletons

It has been a while but here is a classic Pearls Before Swine misdirection [one of my favourite forms of comedic] to get you smiling: And a bonus one depicting Pearls creator Stephan Pastis working SO HARD to get to his intended punclusion:   Gotta love the Pearls... and if you do... [For a classic stupid Croc Pearls, click here] [For more Pearls Before Swine strips than you can shake a very long stick at, [...]

psalmthing to chew on: psalm 69

So hey, remember that King David guy and the 'man after God's own heart' moniker? Well, here is that guy going on a little enemy rant... 22 May the table set before them become a snare;     may it become retribution and a trap. 23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,     and their backs be bent forever. 24 Pour out your wrath on them;     let your fierce anger overtake them. 25 May their place be deserted;     let there [...]

Dangerous Things You Can Least Expect: Exercise

Oh dear, my alter ego, Brad Fish is at it again, this time taking a look at Exercise and suggesting that the word originates from the time you told your then-girlfriend that, "Yes, those jeans do make you look fat!" Brad Fish heads off to the Gym and tries a variety of classes before coming to the conclusion that most things associated with exercise might be a Dangerous Thing You Can Least Expect.   [...]

Taboo Topic: Living with Disability – meet Susannah Prinz and Monrovia [Deaf]

Our eldest daughter Monrovia, who is now six and a half years old, was born profoundly deaf. We first heard the words “profound hearing loss” when she was three weeks old, after failing multiple hearing tests. At the time I felt pretty overwhelmed by first-time parenthood, so the idea of parenting a newborn with special needs felt quite heavy and scary. Here’s an excerpt from an email I wrote to friends after the appointment in [...]

What concerns you, concerns me

So i think i have a different understanding and idea of church than a number of people i know. And my picture of what church is feels a lot bigger, rather than smaller, than some other peoples. i am not saying that the Sunday church local congregation vibe is not church, but i am suggesting that maybe it is more than that. One example for me has always been so-called 'para-church' organisations like Scripture Union and [...]

psalmthing to chew on: psalm 68

1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;     may his foes flee before him. 2 May you blow them away like smoke—     as wax melts before the fire,     may the wicked perish before God. i'm not going to lie, i often don't quite know what to do with some of the anger and violence of the Old Testament. When i was young it was as black and white as an old A-team episode [google it, kids!] [...]

It’s food, Jim, but not as we know it.

First off, i should firmly declare that there is nothing wrong with pasta. i love pasta and would probably be fine eating pasta every day if it was allowed. 'Pasta is life' as i imagine the Latin Americans say, or more accurately, 'Pasta la vista, baby.' Or something. But i have found that for me [and possibly for Val's sister and bro who we live with at the moment] pasta becomes the default easy go-to meal. [...]

Lies about Sex: Part II – The Myth of the Magical Wedding Night

Perhaps the most often-encountered lie I heard about sex from youth pastors, conference speakers, inspirational books, and the impassioned speeches of parents was the idea that if you wait until you are married to have sex, God will reward you with mind-blowing sex and a magical wedding night.   For those of you who don’t believe there are individuals, churches, and organizations who teach this, here are some ACTUAL QUOTES on the subject: “For you, the [...]

They ARE someone’s family.

Would you notice if they were yours? Wow, heart tug video of the weekend...     Would i have done any better? is the question of the moment... Do i look? Do i engage? Do i take the time to hear and share a story, or even a meal? Not every time necessarily... but some time. And at the very least do i at least acknowledge the person'ness of the person? Wo!

Taboo Topics: Race – Meet Hari Kodabolu, some humour and the insulting idea of ‘The other’

Changing tack a little bit on this whole race conversation as we bring a little humour into it. Comedian Hari Kondabolu appears on the David Letterman show and shares some race-related humour which becomes deeply insightful when you take a moment to realise some of the truths that the comedy is bases on and especially as he dives into the highly insulting idea of group of people from different races or cultures being classified simply as [...]
