Why i am not drinking alcohol in 2017

So i'm not drinking in 2017 [just in case the title wasn't too obvious]. i mean i'm drinking water, and coffee, and chocolate shots if i ever go back to Spice Route cos chocolate shots, Mmm... but not the alcohol. And it's not actually the biggest deal. i don't think i have a drinking problem [ah, but that's EXACTLY what people with drinking problems say]. i just was thinking about not drinking for a year [...]

My word for 2017: Interdependence

Interdependence: The dependence of two or more people or things on each other [Oxford English Dictionary] i have just returned from an incredible few days camping at the Cederberg with an assortment of pretty amazing people. Much fun and games and dam building [yup, we literally built a little dam and it made the one pool rise about a meter - impressive stuff] and time and reflection and food and words and Extreme Bocce Ball matches [...]

Beware the Ides of 2017

To 2017 and beyond... i imagine this might come as a surprise to some people... or maybe not. But in the last week or so i've had a strong sense that God has been telling me that i need to get a little more hectic in 2017. You might not agree with this if you were one of the people who responded with a strongly worded response to my 'The Passion of the Chris' blog [...]

Come and Race with me

When it comes to things about race, i have been on a journey for just over two years. i have certainly not arrived and assume this will be a life long journey. But i did realise that i couldn't ignore it any more or choose to get involved if, when and how it suited me. Living in South Africa right now means that issues of race, justice and poverty have to be forefront in my [...]

Community Parenting: Advice from those who don’t have children. [Intro]

Do i as a person without children have anything of worth to offer as advice to those who do? This blog post or mini series comes out of an article i wrote for 1Africa this morning, titled, 'Other People's Children: An offer of help' with the bottom line being that i do believe we might have something to offer. Which led to me posting this as my status on Facebook: For ANYONE WHO DOESN'T HAVE ANY CHILDREN, [...]

8 steps to help me ally better

"How can i be a good ally?" Well one of the ways is to definitely do some work. Read, research, listen, watch, don't expect people [especially black people] to spoonfeed you all the answers. But i did come across this which was created for Americaland but has some strongly helpful overlaps for our present situation and context. This is from a list put together by an activism camp called 'Localise This' and it's a list [...]

Hope for South Africa rising…

i am hope-filled for South Africa. i am not so naive to not suspect how much of a knife point this country feels on at the moment and to know that at any moment things could suddenly go horribly wrong. We have a LONG way to go still and time feels short. But being in contact and engagement with an incredible growing amount of people who get it or are working towards getting it, really [...]

Coffee over Pie Holes

Soooo, i wrote a post with my reflections on the Passion worship event on the weekend as most of you know and BOOM! Oh and then there was the one i wrote titled, 'Sodomy: A South African Love Story' which was a "great post, but please change the title because it's awkward having that on my wall" and that exploded on The Warehouse wall. The piece i shared on Equality, Equity and Reality didn't get [...]

Ten Steps to Becoming more Productive

Time flies: You can't, they move too fast. [Think about it]. But yes, that would be an accurate description of my life, at least since we returned to South Africa in August of 2014. Non stop. i sit with things i want to do, things i need to do, a physical pile of books to be read [a whole lot that i have to provide reviews for on my blog], people i want to see, [...]

See you, see me

Hey, you! Yes, YOU!   i see you!   Is that maybe not everything we want to hear and know? That i am seen. That someone acknowledges my existence and my presence. That someone knows my name. That i count. i matter.   DO YOU SEE?   Think back over this week… What was the name of the car guard you tipped with a R2 you found in the corner of your purse? The [...]
