How to condemn evil while loving evil people?

i came across this article titled, 'Loving Dzhokhar Tsarnaev' [one of the suspected terrorists involved in the recent Boston Marathon bombing] shortly after it happened and it really made some strong points in terms of our role as Christ following people in the wake of such a horrific disaster. the author, Adam Mabry, starts off by highlighting two opposing reactions which are equally unhelpful: 'The first is the xenophobic, racial, and even religious hatred of [...]

on why rape [and violence to women in general] HAS to be taken seriously, part 1: attack on my wife

my wife was attacked in the street yesterday. fortunately not physically and thank God there were two Latino guys in a car nearby that she was eventually able to get to come to her assistance but even then they didn't really know what to do and the [can only assume he was completely drugged up] guy continued to threaten. many, many thoughts on this and the closest to the foreground is complete and utter thankfulness [...]

Lars and the real girl church

so last nite tbV and i finally watched the movie 'Lars and the real girl' which had come highly recommended by our Philly friend Janell Anema and it was indeed well worth the watch. Ryan Gosling [who i have been completely against since he starred in 'The Notebook' which is a movie which irritated me beyond belief for reasons that most people don't really care much about] is phenomenal as Lars, who is a likeable [...]

Taboo Topics: Cancer [Intro]

Cancer is a beast! it used to be this far off distant disease that you heard about and was pretty scary, but i'll bet you most people these days know someone who has been through it, is currently suffering from it or undergoing treatment, or knows a number of people who have died from it. my gran, Doris Anderson, died of skin-cancer related issues. as did my uncle David Anderson. and then just recently my [...]

a letter, from Magda Pecsenye, to her sons about stopping rape.

'Dear Boys, Some really horrible things happened to someone who could be one of your friends, and it was done by some people who could be your friends. You're 11 and almost-8 now, so the incident that made me write this letter isn't something you've heard about, but this stuff keeps happening, unfortunately. So I need to talk to you about it...' with that attention-grabbing opening paragraph, Magda Pecsenye, who is the writer for the [...]

Weekly Photo Challenge: (Resolved)

i really like this picture of me and the reason i chose it for this particular challenge is the idea of casting a wider shadow. the past 18 months i spent as part of a non-profit organisation called the Simple Way which in some cases meant a broadening of shadow as i was given the potential to influence [to some extent] an organisation that is world-known and has an extended sphere of influence and audience... [...]

a kiss before dying

my cousin Laura died two days ago. she was 30. recently married. then cancer reared its ugly head. absolute tragedy. just before she went into hospital i did get to send her an email and let her know that i loved her and was praying for her and her family and hoping for a miracle from God [which sadly never happened, not how i was hoping anyways] so it was really sad, but there was [...]

when traditions are grabbed on to.

i am not a big fan of tradition whose only purpose in life is "we did it this way last time" last nite, the beautiful Val and i celebrated Christmas eve with a few of our neighbors from Potter street where we have lived the last 19 months and are 5 days away from leaving... it was a fitting end to have a house full of good food, laughter and excited wife squeals and dances [...]

Common Change: If you want to make the world a better place…

for the last 19 months, myself and my beautiful wife Valerie have been living and working with the Simple Way Christian non-profit organisation in Philadelphia, Americaland and yesterday was our last official office day... we fly out back towards South Africa on the 30th of December... can't wait! but what next? well we hope to spend around a month and a half at home and then [providing we find the financial support we will need [...]
